My PC isn't connecting to my monitor
Step 1 - Check Your Ports
One of the most common issues when your PC isn't connecting to your monitor is due to it being connected into the wrong set of ports on the back of your PC, this can catch out even the most veteran PC users.
If you have a dedicated graphics card the correct ports will be the lower set of ports on the back of the PC, not the ones located at the top. These are usually horizontal but if your PC has the graphics card mounted vertically, then they will be vertical.
Please see the diagram below:
If you have incorrectly connected your monitor to the ports at the top, simply turn the PC off, connect your display cable to the lower ports and turn the PC on, give it a few seconds to run it's checks and boot up.
If this does not resolve your issue, please move to Step 2.
Step 2 - Checking Your Monitor
Although it may seem like the cable connecting to the monitor is correctly inserted, it's always worth double checking, some cables can be a little finicky and need an extra push to ensure a flush connection into the display port on the monitor.
Once you have checked your cables, make sure the input is correctly selected based on what cable you are using. Most modern day monitors will automatically change to the detected output, but some may still need it to be manually changed.
You can usually find your control buttons on the bottom left or bottom right bezel of your monitor, but can vary with different brands and models.
If this still doesn't present any display, please move to Step 3.
Step 3 - Checking Your Cable
Even with brand new monitors with brand new cables, there is still the possibility of a cable being DOA (dead on arrival) so you should always try an alternative cable that is compatible with your monitor and graphics card.
This will still apply even if you are trying to use a cable that previously was known as working as it may have become damaged or stopped working.
Trying an alternative cable will rule out a faulty cable and help further with your diagnostics.
If you are still not receiving any output on your monitor please move to Step 4.
Step 4 - Trying An Alternative Display
If you have already checked your monitor settings, and changed your cable and you are still not outputting any display then the final check is to try a different display.
Similar rules apply to checking a different cable to checking your monitor, even brand new or previously known working monitors can suffer issues, so this will rule out if the monitor is faulty, or if there is a further issue with your PC.
You can try any other monitor, or even TV using a compatible connection, if the correct cable is used and the correct setting is set on the monitor or TV and you are still not getting any display output then it could be that something has gone wrong with the hardware.
